Drinking water has been contaminated by PFAS compounds in the vicinity of the Solvay manufacturing facility in West Deptford, Gloucester County, NJ. Beginning in 2013, a firestorm erupted when people and municipalities found out about the pollution, triggering wells to shut down, water to be imported, treatment systems to be installed and finally regulations adopted by NJ Department of Environmental Protection requiring the removal of the 3 most prevalent PFAS contaminants from the state’s drinking water systems: PFNA (the major chemical compound that fouled the water around Solvay), PFOA and PFOS.

The public is now just finding out that another PFAS chemical compound that was used by Solvay to replace PFNA has been released into the environment and is being found in streams, soil, and drinking water. There is much we don’t know about this “replacement” compound but one thing scientist are saying is that it is highly toxic, even more toxic than the dangerous compound it was supposed to replace. This is an ironic and outrageous turn of events. Is this toxin being removed by the filtration systems in place already? Where has this new contaminant spread? The public needs to know more and more must be done to identify and remove the “new” pollutant from our water and our environment.

We invite you to attend an in-person public forum hosted by Delaware Riverkeeper Network Monday evening July 26 to hear about what is being discovered, what is being kept secret by Solvay, to ask questions, and learn about the next steps in the cleanup of the pollution and how you can be involved.
