PFOA Drinking Water Contamination Public Meeting

Attend virtual PA Environmental Quality Board Public Meeting
Tuesday, 9:00am June 15, 2021

The PA Environmental Quality Board has posted on their agenda for June 15 the rulemaking Petition submitted by Delaware Riverkeeper Network for the state to set a safe drinking water standard (also called a maximum contaminant level (MCL)) for Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA).

Please join the virtual meeting by registering today (You must register ahead)

This day and the action that may be taken at this meeting regarding statewide regulations to establish MCLs requiring the removal of PFAS from our drinking water has been a long time coming. DRN filed our Petition in 2017 but did not get a response report. To push for action, DRN sued PADEP in 2019. Finally, DEP responded with a report to our Petition this year. DRN responded with comments on their report and on the report produced by the Drexel PFAS Advisory Group, which makes recommendations for MCLs for several PFAS compounds.

The Drexel Report starts on page 53 of the PDF. Page 60 has a summary table of the recommended MCLs:

Reference Dose

MCLG proposed

perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)

3.9 ng/kg/day

perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS)

3.1 ng/kg/day

14 PPT

perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)

2.2 ng/kg/day

perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS)

4.0 ng/kg/day

20 PPT

perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA)

None derived

perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS)

39 ng/kg/day

55 PPT

ammonium salt of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer(GenX)

75 ng/kg/day

108 PPT

Table 1: Summary of Reference Dose and proposed Chronic Non-Cancer MCLG for perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS), and the ammonium salt of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer (GenX)

NOTE: It takes a couple of steps to register, so please register ahead, registration is now open. Need help registering or have questions? Contact

The more people who join the meeting, the more public interest will be demonstrated to those who will be making decisions about getting these highly toxic contaminants out of the Commonwealth’s drinking water. Please tune into the meeting to stand up for clean, safe water! Thank you!
