“Our Storied Local Waters”

“Our Storied Local Waters”

The Delaware River and tributary streams, such as the Newton Creek and Cooper River, were once so polluted dock workers would pass out from fumes emanating from the river and the migratory American shad would suffocate trying to swim up river to lay eggs in the cold Catskill Mountain streams. But here we are today, celebrating the 47th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, and there are shad festivals up and down the river and it’s not unusual to see kayakers and SUP’s paddling on Camden’s waterways. There’s more work to be done and luckily, there’s a little Jacques Cousteau, Erin Brockovich and Maya van Rossum in all of us.
