River Tracker Network

Maiden Creek Watershed Association members learn
sampling protocols at a DRN training session.

Goal: To empower citizens with basic knowledge of water chemistry and parameters that affect their local streams. This knowledge and involvement gives citizens increased tools and credibility when speaking for their local streams. Data collected by our River Tracker Teams on more than a dozen parameters are entered into a Delaware Watershed-wide database maintained by DRN. DRN offers assistance in data analysis to monitors interested in using their data at the local level. This information is also used by DRN as a “red flag system” to identify specific areas of need for restoration or protection and to alert regulatory agencies of pollution incidents. Since 1999, volunteer monitors have reported over 80 pollution incidents and advocated for clean up of these pollution sources that otherwise, may have gone unnoticed.

Volunteer Requirement - Volunteers are required to attend an initial training session as well as participate in annual quality assurance and quality control sessions.  Data must be collected once a month between the hours of 10 and 2 pm.  We are currently not expanding this initiative at new sampling locations unless a monitoring study design has been completed for the waterway of interest.
