Bug Madness Initiative

Collection of a macroinvertebrate sample using a
D-frame net - Manatawny Creek.

Goal: To empower citizens with basic knowledge and sampling techniques for studying their waterways using benthic macroinvertebrates as an indicator of stream health.   This knowledge and involvement gives citizens increased tools and credibility when speaking for their local streams during the decision-making process.   DRN works with local groups to use this data at the local level and to further its goals of watershed protection.

Volunteer Requirement: Participation in Stream School, a two-day course offered by DRN and Stroud Water Research Center usually held at least twice a year.  Assist DRN with spring and/or fall macroinvertebrate collection at specific sampling locations determined by DRN.  Identification of macroinvertebrates in a lab-setting is another component to this initiative.
